Engaging Communities: Start where you are

It doesn’t matter where you live or the local political climate — when it comes to building the movement for universal health care, you can start where you are.  Find out how groups around the state are getting the message out. A few dedicated people can have a big impact — it all begins at the local level. Come share experiences and ideas, learn about resources, and connect with others to establish communication and support networks.

Facilitators:
Elaine Branjord has been proud to work to create a simple, just system of health care coverage in Colorado. Beginning in 2012, Elaine learned the ropes of organizing in Northern Colorado with the help of her friend and adviser, Eliza Carney. Presently Elaine continues leadership in Fort Collins. She is a member of the strategy team and supports the work of community organizers in our state.

Madeleine Jacobs, MD was a family physician in Fremont County, Colorado for 28 years. She writes, “When my patients began ending up in Intensive Care on ventilators because they could not afford their asthma medications and dying from metastatic colon cancer because they could not afford colonoscopies, I finally threw up my hands and decided my time would be better spent working on universal health care.” Madi has become one of the Foundation’s most effective community leaders. Read more of her story here.

Bill Semple, LCSW, has worked hard to fix the broken health care system in a variety of roles, including on the Foundation’s Board of Directors. He’ll introduce the Foundation’s Engage team, and how volunteers can help reach majority public support for universal health via letters to the editor, blog post, and Op Eds, among others.

Nancy Reed has served on the Foundation’s Strategy Team for the last year.  She, along with Jim Potter and Rich Shannon, offer a workshop for people who would like to speak in support of universal health care whether with family and friends, in informal community gatherings, or before audiences.  The workshop is 4 hours and includes our values in support of health care for all, understanding the basics of financing health care, presentation materials and outlines, public speaking tips, how to answer tough questions, as well as access to our Speakers Toolkit.
